There are some guys you wish still skated all the time and Jake Rupp is one of those for me. In 1993, I first met Jake and went to skate Baltimore my very first time with him. From there, I have some crazy adventures with him over the years and had a blast where ever we traveled. It was also amazing to see the little skate rat I met who lived on a farm become one of the biggest pros in the start of the 2000’s.
Unfortunately when your time in professional skateboarding is done & sponsors all fall away, real life kicks in & the opportunity to go skating is less and less there. I tried to see Jake on my last visit back to PA and heard things were not going so great from him. Skateboarding doesn’t really fit anymore into Jake’s life as it once did. As a friend, it broke my heart but I couldn’t reach him… As a fan, I wish he would just get back and channel those emotions back into his skateboard and make a come back. Who doesn’t love watching Jake skate?!?!?!?! I heard Jake still will show up to a mini ramp session here and there around the Mason-Dixon line. Friends say you can still see that magic come through when he is in the heat of the session and having a good time.
Thanks for the Chrome Ball Incident for keeping these memories alive for me. With the ever changing world of the internet and enough footage coming out every day to make a 411 video, it is nice to be reminded of some of the amazing things that have happened in skateboarding over the years. When I see old photos like this, it gets me hyped & gives me the hope again to see Jake on a board again. I think I am not the only one out there who would love that.
I can not wait for Sylvain’s Lakai part to drop soon!
With the winter months still here and no money to travel until one of my clients pays me, I am trying to keep positive. You have to push things forward no matter what, right? I see a lot of my friends traveling the world right now via social media and I am a bit jealous. I know where I would like to be traveling/ filming right now but I am stuck in the Berlin winter. Important things like taking smaller jobs to pay your bills are the priority since I don’t want to end up like a Crystal Waters’ song.
In the meantime, I thought I could start blogging some of the photos I have shot in the last year or two in order to keep the motivation going. It is only about 3 weeks before the weather should be warm enough to get back on the daily grind… I can’t wait! The first project should be a good one here in Berlin. There is lots of planning to set it up but when the clips drops, it will be another reason you will want to visit the city.
1TB down, 5 more to go…
